SUMMARY:The Doughnut King
DESCRIPTION:Walnut Library Elementary Book Club\nTris Levin thought moving from New York City to middle-of-nowhere Petersville meant life would definitely get worse…only it actually got better. But just when things are looking up\, problems start rolling in. \nHis doughnut business has a major supply issue. And that’s not the worst part\, Petersville has its own supply problem―it doesn’t have enough people. Folks keep moving away and if they can’t get people to stay\, Petersville may disappear. \nPetersville needs to become a tourist destination\, and his shop could be a big part of it\, if Tris can keep up with demand. There’s only one solution: The Belshaw Donut Robot. If Tris can win “Can You Cut It\,” the cutthroat competitive kids’ cooking show\, he can get the cash to buy the machine. But even with the whole town training and supporting him\, Tris isn’t sure he can live with what it takes to takes to win. \nThis sequel to The Doughnut Fix is about growing up\, family\, change\, and as always\, doughnuts. Kids with the spirit of an entrepreneur will relate to the ups and downs Tris experiences in this book. Parents and teachers\, your middle school kids will love this story!

SUMMARY:November Book Club
DESCRIPTION:On a sultry August day in 1922\, Jay Gatsby is shot dead in his West Egg swimming pool. To the police\, it appears to be an open-and-shut case of murder/suicide when the body of George Wilson\, a local mechanic\, is found in the woods nearby. \nThen a diamond hairpin is discovered in the bushes by the pool\, and three women fall under suspicion. Each holds a key that can unlock the truth to the mysterious life and death of this enigmatic millionaire.  \nDaisy Buchanan once thought she might marry Gatsby—before her family was torn apart by an unspeakable tragedy that sent her into the arms of the philandering Tom Buchanan. \nJordan Baker\, Daisy’s best friend\, guards a secret that derailed her promising golf career and threatens to ruin her friendship with Daisy as well. \nCatherine McCoy\, a suffragette\, fights for women’s freedom and independence\, and especially for her sister\, Myrtle Wilson\, who’s trapped in a terrible marriage. \nTheir stories unfold in the years leading up to that fateful summer of 1922\, when all three of their lives are on the brink of unraveling. Each woman is pulled deeper into Jay Gatsby’s romantic obsession\, with devastating consequences for all of them. \nJillian Cantor revisits the glittering Jazz Age world of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby\, retelling this timeless American classic from the women’s perspective. Beautiful Little Fools is a quintessential tale of money and power\, marriage and friendship\, love and desire\, and ultimately the murder of a man tormented by the past and driven by a destructive longing that can never be fulfilled.

SUMMARY:October Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Adult Book Club\nBook club is on Thursday\, October 27th at 7:00 pm – stop in today to pick up your copy\n\nOctober’s book club pick is Home Before Dark by Riley Sager\n\nBells that ring themselves. Record players that turn on and play music to empty rooms. Ghosts that climb out of wardrobes. Maggie Holt doesn’t believe in these things\, even though they are the details of the story that made her family famous. Twenty-five years ago\, she and her parents\, Ewan and Jess\, moved into Baneberry Hall\, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. They spent twenty days there before fleeing in the dead of night\, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a horror memoir\, House of Horrors. His tale of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon\, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity-and skepticism.\n\nMaggie has lived her life in the the shadow of her father’s book\, so when she inherits Baneberry Hall after his death\, she returns to renovate the house to prepare it for sale. However\, her homecoming is anything but warm. People from the past\, chronicled in House of Horrors\, lurk in the shadows. And locals aren’t thrilled that their small town has been made infamous thanks to Maggie’s father. Even more unnerving is Baneberry Hall itself-a place filled with relics from another era that hint at a history of dark deeds. As Maggie experiences strange occurrences straight out of Ewan’s book\, she starts to wonder if what he wrote was more fact than fiction.\n\nAlternating between Maggie’s uneasy homecoming and chapters from her father’s book\, Home Before Dark is the story of a house with long-buried secrets and a woman’s quest to uncover them-even if the truth is far more terrifying than any haunting.

SUMMARY:July Book Club
DESCRIPTION:May 10\, 1940. The Netherlands was swarming with Third Reich troops. In seven days it’s entirely occupied by Nazi Germany. Joining a small resistance cell in the Dutch city of Haarlem were three teenage girls: Hannie Schaft\, and sisters Truus and Freddie Oversteegen who would soon band together to form a singular female underground squad.\n\nSmart\, fiercely political\, devoted solely to the cause\, and “with nothing to lose but their own lives\,” Hannie\, Truus\, and Freddie took terrifying direct action against Nazi targets. That included sheltering fleeing Jews\, political dissidents\, and Dutch resisters. They sabotaged bridges and railways\, and donned disguises to lead children from probable internment in concentration camps to safehouses. They covertly transported weapons and set military facilities ablaze. And they carried out the assassinations of German soldiers and traitors–on public streets and in private traps–with the courage of veteran guerilla fighters and the cunning of seasoned spies.\n\nIn telling this true story through the lens of a fearlessly unique trio of freedom fighters\, Tim Brady offers a little-known perspective of the Dutch resistance during the war. Of lives under threat; of how these courageous young women became involved in the underground; and of how their dedication evolved into dangerous\, life-threatening missions on behalf of Dutch patriots–regardless of the consequences.\nHarrowing\, emotional\, and unforgettable\, Three Ordinary Girls finally moves these three icons of resistance into the deserved forefront of world history.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:By day\, 17-year-old Jo Kuan works as a lady’s maid for the cruel daughter of one of the wealthiest men in Atlanta. But by night\, Jo moonlights as the pseudonymous author of a newspaper advice column for the genteel Southern lady\, “Dear Miss Sweetie”. When her column becomes wildly popular\, she uses the power of the pen to address some of society’s ills\, but she’s not prepared for the backlash that follows when her column challenges fixed ideas about race and gender. \nWhile her opponents clamor to uncover the secret identity of Miss Sweetie\, a mysterious letter sets Jo off on a search for her own past and the parents who abandoned her as a baby. But when her efforts put her in the crosshairs of Atlanta’s most notorious criminal\, Jo must decide whether she\, a girl used to living in the shadows\, is ready to step into the light. \nWith prose that is witty\, insightful\, and at times heartbreaking\, Stacey Lee masterfully crafts an extraordinary social drama set in the New South.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:“Time Will Tell” by Barry Lyga\nFour teens have dug up the time capsule that their parents buried in 1986 and never bothered to recover. But in addition to the expected ephemera of mixtapes\, Walkmans\, photographs\, letters\, toys\, and assorted junk\, Elayah\, Liam\, Marcie\, and Jorja discover something sinister: a hunting knife stained with blood and wrapped with a note. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to kill anyone.”\nAs the action alternates between the present day and 1986\, the mystery unfolds and the sins of the past echo into today. The teens haven’t just unearthed a time capsule: they’ve also dug up pain and secrets that someone–maybe one of their own parents–is willing to kill for.\nBetween life and death there is a library\, and within that library\, the shelves go on forever. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be if you had made other choices . . . Would you have done anything different\, if you had the chance to undo your regrets?\nA dazzling novel about all the choices that go into a life well lived\, from the internationally bestselling author of Reasons to Stay Alive and How To Stop Time.\n“The Midnight Librarian” by Matt Haig\nSomewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books\, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is\, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been\, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?\nIn The Midnight Library\, Matt Haig’s enchanting new novel\, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one\, following a different career\, undoing old breakups\, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life\, and what makes it worth living in the first place.
